However, there is a host of over 5,000 items beyond the printed "I Visited the National Chard Festival" bathrobe out there, offered by more than 1,200 vendors currently available that I know about. Items like shower shelves, popcorn, walking sticks, globes, soda cans...and more. When I speak of the unique, I dont mean to discount the marketing value of the common pencil. I just want the world to know that many companies, large and small, realize that their promotions are only limited by their imaginations, and not by the products they use. Speaking of using your imagination.... Imagine a Measuring Spoon. "A what?" I hear you saying. Yes, a measuring spoon, but not the norm. A 5-in-1 with a top that slides easily to allow you to measure five quantities with only one spoon? You may have to see it to believe it, but this inexpensive little gem will help your profits soar. Youve got to remember that your web pages are being seen by people using computers in their homes and also in businesses, when they are using their computers for business purposes, or during breaks. Measuring spoons are used frequently when measuring sugar for coffee in a business setting, or in homes to get just the right amount of vanilla or garlic powder when making that special cake. The more this dandy little device is used, the more frequently your message will be seen. Its all about exposure. I was taught this valuable lesson by my local bank. My son asked the teller if she had any candy or stickers. (Hes trained in the art of batting his eyelashes and getting whatever he wants.) When the teller said she didnt have any candy and instead handed him the measuring spoon, he was quite dismayed. However, looking on at the scene, I was having a revelation. Wow! This bank was creating goodwill by giving us something for our deposit, and at the same time, they were creating repeat exposure for themselves. The best way I know is just to start! That may sound a little simple and understated, but it's really true. Perl is quite easy to learn, especially if you have other programming experience. If you want to learn Perl, it's most likely because you have a specific Web application in mind. The problem with most Perl tutorials I've seen is that you have to wade through pages and pages of instructions to find the info you need for your specific application. I'd like to help you start from whatever computer skill level youre at now with a series of articles for forthcoming issues of Website Success Monthly that will help you learn Perl. In my articles, I'll try to cut to the chase as quickly as I can to get you programming useable Web applications as soon as possible while still learning enough of the basics. These articles aren't meant to be an all-inclusive Perl reference, but if you've thought you'd like to learn Perl, but just didn't know how or where to start, hopefully I can help. The first article will appear in next month's issue. In the meantime, if there are specific questions you'd like to have answered about Perl programming, please forward them to me and I'll try to incorporate them into my articles. Until next month! Send your search engine placement questions to: askbob@lrsmarketing.com *********** THIS MONTH'S QUESTION: Dear Bob, Thanks for your recent Q & A ("Website Success Monthly") regarding meta tags and search engine placement. I appreciate your putting the whole thing in perspective with the human-run directories rising in importance. Still, it seems the search engines are important. So my question is, what about the java-enabled navigation bars? There are a bunch of lines of script required either in the head or early in the body section of a page's code. Is this java script going to hurt the page's chances of ranking well for real keywords? Thanks, Nowick Gray ***** THE ANSWER: The problem lies in the fact that the spiders "think" that the java is part of the page, and include it when they determine relevancy. Since that script will very likely have little or nothing to do with your targeted keywords, it will not do anything to help. The biggest problem with this is that the more java script you use BEFORE your text, the farther down in the source code it moves the text. This is important for the simple fact that a search engine is going to assume that the higher up on the page your keywords are mentioned, the more likely it is going to be relevant to that word. In other words, if your page is about "Cars", then the spider doesn't see that word in the H1 tags or in the text until it comes across it halfway down your source code. The spider doesnt think like you do (let us all hope), so it is likely going to assume that your page is not as relevant to that term as another person's site who has the H1 tag with "Cars" in it right at the top. My advice is always to avoid anything that takes up space between your head tag and the text unless it is some type of event handler. Just remember, there is always more than one way to skin a cat, and regardless of what they say about high technology, you can out-think a spider. See you at the top.
