In order to accomplish that time consuming task, I'm making an attempt to clear my calendar. Therefore this issue will be a little bit shorter but still packed with great stuff. I am hoping to be able to announce the new site design by October 1st. You will notice that the Critic's Corner feature is missing this month as a result of our time constraints and some restructuring. BJ will no longer be with us and our volunteer review staff will begin to take over the reviews with the September 1st issue. We are still terribly backlogged with critique requests and we ask for your patience in receiving your review. We ask that you do not submit multiple requests as that only slows the review process for everyone. If you fear your request never reached us please email your URL & we will verify receipt of your request. *************************************** GUARANTEED Internet Success and NO SPAM! 10+ years EXPERIENCE now all yours at a new private web site. Often I get a little sample in lumpy packages showing up now and then. But this was a--ah--um-- Well what is it? It turned out to be a clever little device. In fact, the simplest problem had stirred an inventor's creative juices, resulting in an idea that will surely make its inventor a lot of money. Here's what it does: "Bottle It" was created because of a simple problem. Many beverages are now served in cans. Nothing wrong with that, right? Of course not. BUT...many people don't like drinking from cans, for a variety of reasons. The inventor of "Bottle It" turns any standard beverage can into a bottle. Almost like magic, until you actually see how it works. It just pops onto the top of any standard beverage can. The creator of this little marvel even offers an optional snap-on lid for sealing in freshness. The "Bottle It" sample sent to me has now been Duarte-kid-tested and approved. They loved it, and it never leaked once. (This in itself was amazing, considering Test Subject Landon's habit of spilling.). In fact, my daughter was using it in the car while I was pumping gas and the lady next to me said, "Where did you get that!" You see, it's a hot, new, unique, and (as of this hour) virtually unknown item. What if you gave them away at a picnic, or beach party, or even re-sold them? You know what would happen? Jo Smith would ask where Jim Johnson bought it. And then, 'voila'! They notice that it's imprinted with YOUR name. Now THAT's effective advertising. And the good news for you is that the makers have been more focused on launching it in the retail market than in the Promotional Products Industry. So...virtually no one else is offering this right now as a giveaway, gift, or re-sale item. And, you know how I love the unique (and there are millions more out there just like me, in that respect). Does this give you any ideas on promoting your own product and/or service? It should, and I hope you look into this wonderful little creation for what it can do for you (in addition to letting you drink out of a can while you're driving or bicycling without spilling the contents all over you). Thanks to your comments on past articles, I've set-up a web page exclusively for Website Success subscribers to view "Bottle It". Here it is, and use it wisely: http://www.adyourimprint.com/WSM/bottleit.htm Also, as a friendly offer to Lisa's loyal clients, I will not offer this product to my own clientele until 8/15/99. I was absolutely thrilled to receive it. Thanks a lot!! Kind Regards ***** Hi Lisa, Thanks so much for printing the article "The Ultimate Horror" by JoAnn Griffith. I wanted to let you know this solved a problem for me. I have had several people contacting me recently to tell me they can't get some pages on my site and until this article, I had no idea why. You (and your readers) may be interested to know that this problem does not only exist in email addresses, but also exists on web pages where a full URL is not given. For example, www.mycompany.com/page1.htm links to page2.htm in most circumstances. It would appear that the link must be www.mycompany.com/page2.htm............ Regards, Rebecca Habel ***** After reading your newsletter I assume I should go back and re-submit my web site to the 34 search engines that "Add Me" allows you to do. I just did it yesterday and only entered http://timbuk2001.com without the www. I had a hell of a time using "ADDME" as I could not access several of the engines, like Netscape and Alta Vista... pages timed out or got 404 error.... also back button disappeared so I had to start all over 8 times. Do you have any suggestions of a better way to submit new sites? Thanks Tim ** Hi Tim - I'm glad you found our article useful! As far as submitting sites, I can surely share my experiences with you. I've probably used most of the free page submitters out there just to test them out and see how they work. I've found that a huge percentage of the time they "time out" or fail in some way, just as you've described. What I have relied on ever since I opened my website in '97 is hand submitting to all the major search engines. To follow this up I submit to all the directories, link exchanges, classifieds, etc. supported by my Netsubmitter Pro Submission Tool. Hand-submitting to the majors is really not hard. Most just ask for your URL and email address. What takes a ridiculous amount of time are all the directories and classifieds that want every last detail about your existence. That is where my Netsubmitter comes in REAL handy! Plunk in the information one time and submit to many in one shot. Save the file and submit many times in the future without having to retype and retype and retype again. If you would like more information about Netsubmitter Pro feel free to visit: http://www.lrsmarketing.com/netsubmitter Most of your traffic will come from the major search engines, not from these little guys, but sometimes you can hit a few niche directories that pull amazingly well! On the Net anything goes and you at least have to try because .....you never know! Thanks for writing! Lisa Schmeckpeper *************************************** NEED A MERCHANT ACCOUNT? Maybe youve even read about them, but you're still confused by them. Well, don't be! This months Troy's Toolbox is designed to teach you the basics of SSIs and how you can benefit from their use. If you're looking for an in depth technical discussion, look someplace else. But if you're looking for the "Learn How To Use SSIs in 5 Minutes or Less" version, this article is for you! Why would you even want to learn about SSIs and how to use them? To begin with, SSIs are very useful for adding dynamic content to your static HTML pages. But what can you do with them? (1) You can include the same headers and footers automatically on every page of your web site--a real time-saver for making edits across your entire web site! (2) You can have document information, like last modified dates, automatically displayed in your pages. (3) You can embed cgi scripts that will run automatically and print the output to your web page. An example of this would be a rotating script which shows a new quote, joke, image etc., each time the page is visited. So what are SSIs? "SSI" is an acronym that spells out to "Server Side Includes." So just what does this mean? When your browser sends out a request for a web page to a remote server, the server can be configured to check the requested file and see if it is supposed to include additional information before it sends you the final document. What does the server look for? It looks for SSI tags embedded in the HTML of the web page. Okay. You now know what SSI means and a little about how it works, but lets delve deeper to find out exactly what YOU can do with it and exactly how you can make the SSI do what you want. First of all, you need to find out if you can use SSIs on your server. If you don't know, contact your server admin or support to find out. Also, ask them if you need to give your web pages with SSIs a special extension. You may need to give web pages with SSIs a ".shtml" or ".shtm" extension, or you may be able to just give them the normal ".htm" or ".html" extension, depending on the configuration of your server. Now, what is an SSI tag? This is basically just a modified comment tag. It consists of three basic parts (okay, five if you want to get technical): 1. A comment tag opening with an added pound (#) sign: <!--# 2. An element or command that tells the server what to do 3. An attribute option that tells the server the attribute or option for the command 4. A value that tells the server what to perform the command on (I.E. a file name) 5. A comment tag terminator: --> Now lets put them all together using the "include" command: <!--#include file="footer.html" --> This tells the server to include the file name "footer.html" in the requested HTML document. Notice the space between the value, "footer.html" and the terminator "-->." That space MUST be included. Next, lets get off to a quick start by taking a look at the two most commonly used commands, at their attributes, and at some usage examples. 1. INCLUDE: As the name and the example above suggest, this command tells the server to include another file in the current HTML document. This can be used to insert headers and footers, or other text that you want displayed on your web page. This command can also be used to call cgi scripts from within your document, and the output can be displayed on the web page. The attributes or options: "file" or "virtual" Usages: Include a header in a document: <!--#include file="/headers/header1.txt" --> Embed a cgi file in a document: <!--#include virtual="rotate_quotes.cgi" --> 2. FLASTMOD: This command will display the last modified date of a file. The attributes or options: Same as for the "include" command Usages: Show the last modified date of a file that you've linked to: <A HREF="page2.html">Next Page</A> - Last Modified: <!--#flastmod file="page2.html" --> Same thing as above, using the "virtual" attribute: <A HREF="../page2.html">Next Page</A> - Last Modified: <!--#flastmod virtual="../page2.html" --> By now you should have a good working understanding of what SSIs are, how to get started using them, and--most importantly--how they can make your life easier! Have fun! Send your search engine placement questions to: askbob@lrsmarketing.com THIS MONTH'S QUESTION: I own the website http://www.legitima.com and would like to see it top-ranked on the search engines. How???? Best Regards, Jose Neto ***** ANSWER: Boy Jose, you have certainly asked a mouthful with that question! In general, the answer is to make your site relevant to a specific set of keywords and then format it in such a way as to take advantage of each particular engine's algorithms. You do that by researching the top results under your target keywords on each major engine that you are wanting to target. Very quickly you will see patterns evolve, such as most of the top pages having the keyword in the title or most of the top sites having the keywords in the H1 tags, etc. I also recommend reading everything you can get your hands on regarding top search engine placement. There is a lot of stuff out there but you have to be willing to do the work of finding it and then implementing what you learn. There is a very good resource on top placement provided by our gracious publisher. Now, specifically. I went to your site and could tell within seconds what your exact problem is. I took a look at your meta keyword tag and found that you are trying to be all things to all people with just one page. There is no way you can be very relevant to any one keyword when your site is about SEVERAL. Let's take HotCast, for example. If you were to write that page ABOUT HotCast instead of about HotCast AND webspider AND relayserver AND all the others, you would have a very good chance of coming up in the top of a search engine under the keyword HotCast. All you have done here is reduce the amount of relevancy you may have gotten by the number of other keywords you have written your site about. The trick here is this: If you want to place under the keyword HotCast, then make a separate page, (a separate site would be better), about ONLY HotCast. My guess here is that what you would really like to come up on top under would be something like computer programs. Well, in that case, we would write a site ABOUT computer programs. We would not talk about HotCast specifically but generally as it pertains to computer programs. Then we would write separate pages ABOUT HotCast, specifically. The thing to remember is that to a spider, the word HotCast does not tell the spider that it is about computer programs. The title of the page, the meta tags, the H1 tags and the text tell it that. Your page talks about several computer programs but it will not place under that keyword because it does not talk ABOUT computer programs. I realize this may seem a little confusing, but once you get the "concept" down it becomes pretty easy. Just try this. Pick any one of those things in your keywords and put only that thing in your meta keyword tags. Make your title, your H1 tags and--most importantly--your CONTENT about only that thing. Create some interior pages linked from that page with titles like: the history of the keyword, what the press says about the keyword, the benefits of the keyword, who needs the keyword, etc. and I'm willing to bet you that you will see that page placed in the top under that target keyword. Now once you have the concept down, you're on your way. Happy Submitting Bob Massa Personal consultations available http://www.magic-city.net/consulting.htm By the way, I know that due to the volume of questions that I get that not everyone can get an answer.
